Pan-Homenetmen Games to Take Place in Armenia

The Homenetmen Central Executive announced the organization of the 9th Pan Homenetmen Games. The games, a highly anticipated tradition whereby hundreds of Homenetmen’s youth from around the world assemble to meet, compete, and strengthen their Armenian spirit and identity, take place every four years in a country where Homenetmen has a presence and a well-organized chapter.

This year, the 9th Pan Homenetmen Games will be held in Yerevan, from July 27 to August 3. This will be the second time that the games will be held in Yerevan.

Approximately 600 athletes from around the world will take part in these games.  Along with the teams’ coaches, official delegations, as well as the relatives and friends of athletes, with an estimated 1,500 people expected to be in attendance from abroad.

The following competitions will highlight this year’s games:

  • Men’s and women’s basketball
  • Junior boy’s and girl’s basketball
  • Men’s and women’s individual chess
  • Men’s soccer
  • Women’s volleyball
  • Men’s and women’s track and field
  • Men’s and women’s tennis
  • Men’s and women’s table tennis
  • Men’s and women’s swimming

The 9th Pan Homenetmen Games opening ceremonies will be held on July 27 and they are open to the public. The opening ceremonies will feature representatives from the Republic of Armenia, as well as regional and national sporting, religious, and other governmental agencies representatives. There will be a parade through the city along with a torch relay winding through Yerevan’s different districts. The culmination of the ceremonies will feature entertainment by Armenian singers from both Armenia and the Diaspora.

Planned within the competitions are visits by the athletes and delegates to the Armenian Genocide memorial at Dzizernagapert to allow the delegates to pay their respects to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, as well as to the Yeraplour Cemetery in which many of Artsakh’s war martyrs are buried.  Athletes will also participate in educational programs geared towards their Armenian culture and identity.

The 9th Pan Homenetmen Games will culminate with the Victory Gala Ball, featuring officials, guests, and participant athletes.
