In a Reversal, Azerbaijan Invites Opera Singer to Baku

Opera Singer Monserrat Caballe with Artsakh Primate Archbishop Parkev Martirossian in Karabakh last week

Last week the opera singer Montserrat Caballe was declared persona non grata by Azerbaijan.

BAKU—In what appears to be a reversal of a diplomatic position, Baku has invited world-renowned opera singer Montserrat Caballe to Azerbaijan, after protesting her recent visit to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, reported the Trend news agency.

Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Spain Altay Afandiyev requested from the Spanish culture minister a meeting with Caballe in order to deliver a letter from the Azeri Culture Minister Abulfaz Garayev.

The letter says that her visit could harm relations with Spain and extends an invitation to Caballe to visit Azerbaijan.

On June 5, Azerbaijan sent Spain a note of protest in connection with the Spanish opera singer’s visit to Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Foreign Ministry of Spain replied to the note saying that the foreign ministry visits by private citizens do not change the country’s official position on the conflict resolution process.

“The response of the Foreign Ministry of Spain received by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Madrid on Tuesday says that such visits paid on a private initiative do not change the official position of Spain on this issue,” the Embassy told Trend.

The letter added that Spain supported the efforts of the international community for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Caballé described Artsakh as a “cradle of Christianity.” “The most important is that this cradle of Christianity has been maintained in the region. This is the greatest impression from my visit,” Montserrat Caballé said, speaking on Artsakh Public TV.

After her performance at the Gandzasar Monastery in Artsakh, Caballé told the State TV that she admires the harmony of Armenian music and Armenian architecture. She was inspired by the stories told by the Primate of the Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

“This is a very important moment, because it’s a great blessing to be in this island of Christianity. Christianity sits very deep in my soul. All this is like a miracle,” she said, confessing that she had similar emotions in Israel and Vatican.

Montserrat Caballé was in Artsakh for a private visit. She visited Stepanakert, Gandzasar, Shushi and had a meeting with Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Bako Sahakian.

It is a fitting tribute to an artist, Montserrat Caballe, to expose Azerbaijan’s despotism and hatred to everything Armenian. Singlehandedly the famous soprano showed to the world the naked aggression of Azerbaijan.
