TEHRAN (FNA)—Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Azerbaijan’s special envoy to Tehran Kamaladdin Heydarov stressed the need to utilize each and every capacity of the two countries to pave the ground for the enhancement of bilateral ties in various political, economic, cultural, and scientific sectors.
“Iran and Azerbaijan have good relations with each other, yet the capacity to expand relations and enhance cooperation is great,” the Iranian president said during a meeting with Heydarov in Tehran on Saturday.
The Azeri envoy, for his part, expressed Baku’s interest in boosting relations with Tehran after he handed a written message by President Ilham Aliyev to President Rouhani.
“Good conditions have been created after the new administration took office which has paved the way for expansion of mutual ties and the Republic of Azerbaijan is determined to take advantage of this situation,” the envoy said, while referring to an impending visit by Aliyev to Iran.
Iran has recently enhanced efforts to boost political, economic, security and cultural ties and cooperation with regional and neighboring countries, specially the Central Asian states, including Azerbaijan.
On Friday, top diplomats of Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan held a meeting in the Turkish city of Van on expansion of ties among the three nations, and discussed the latest developments on the international and regional scenes.
True Persian Iranians should be careful who they shake hands with “warmly”, simply having a common religious background does not cut it anymore these days on the geopolitical stage. Geostrategic behavioral precedence should be taken into account by the Persian Iranians far more than mere commonality in Islamic background. ….
Too bad we won’t get to expand our ties with Iran, especially because they have a greater personal interest in preventing Turkic expansion in the Caucasus than Russia does.
That is not good for us Armenians. Iran cooperating with Azerbaijan isn’t in our interest. To the Armenians telling us it’s not good for Armenia to cooperate with the West and Israel, do you see now? Iran is collaborating with our enemies Turks and Azeries, but we can’t collaborate with Israel and the West? That’s unfair for us.
Iran is boosting it’s relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. We can boost our relations with the West and Israel regardless of what Iran thinks.

What this really means is that Turks/Azeris see that Russia’s influence in the region is growing and their’s is shrinking and are desperately trying to pull Iran to their side.
Good nes, it shows Turkey is losing it’s influence on Azerbaijan
No, it means that Azerbaijan is diversifying its relations within its neighborhood, and we’re putting all of our hope and faith into Russia, who is eventually going to let us down because we’ve placed such high hopes on such an internally unstable and increasingly resented entity. Armenia keeps turning down Iranian offers for cooperation thanks to Russia, and now Iran is looking to get a foot into the Caucasus once more through Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is aware that it needs all of the friends it can get, unlike us, who think there’s just Russia and nothing else.
This attitude of voluntary and self-isolation is going to come back to bite us in the ass big time in a few years.
