Young Armenian Women Inspired to Volunteer after ARS Focus Group

Participants at the ARS Anahid Chapter's focus group event

LOS ANGELES—The Armenian Relief Society of Western USA’s Anahid Chapter held a focus group with young women on March 6 at Ferrahian High School in Encino, Calif. The purpose of the event was for chapter organizers to connect with a younger generation and learn their perspective about community work. A follow-up session is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 1.

Over 20 women in their 20s and 30s attended the focus group and were excited about the opportunity to learn about the ARS’ humanitarian activities.

Attendees spoke about their experience in volunteer work and asked questions about the ARS’ activities. They expressed interest in getting involved, to the point of asking how, when and where they could volunteer.

Organizers wanted to know what attendees thought about volunteerism. The feedback was positive. Susie Poladian said she wanted to become involved in the ARS because she already does community work. “I want to help out even more than I do within the Armenian community.”

“I didn’t know what to expect, but it was nice to see the younger generation show interest,” said Nellie Avakian. “I knew the ARS has lots of activities, but I didn’t know about all of the social service programs.” Some of the conversation revolved around the specific programs of the ARS during its 100-year history.

One of the attendees, Rita Hajjarr, said the event was inspiring and commended the chapter for getting the group together. Attendees were very enthusiastic about where the dialogue for involvement was headed and wanted to have a follow-up event.

Chapter organizers scheduled the follow-up meeting for May 1, 2014.
