New Prime Minister to Be Announced Monday

Republican Party Spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov at a press conference

YEREVAN (Armenpress)—Armenia’s ruling Republican Party will announce Armenia’s next Prime Minister on Monday, April 14, following a meeting of the Party’s executive body, Republican Party Spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov told the press Thursday.

Sharmazanov refused to disclose any information and urged the press not to speculate on the appointee until the official announcement is made.

The previous Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan, resigned last week in a surprise announcement. Sargsyan has said that his decision was a serious one, which he had weighed for a long time, that it was for personal reasons, and that he had tendered his resignation a month prior.

Nevertheless, analysts were not deterred from relating the move to the failure of the government’s pension reform law, which was struck down by Armenia’s Constitutional Court, and to joint calls by opposition parties for a vote of no confidence against Sargsyan’s government.

Sargsyan will stay in office until the new Prime Minister takes over.
