Ankara Calls Artsakh Elections ‘Illegal’

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu

ANKARA—Turkish Republic considers the parliamentary elections to take place on May 3 in Nagorno-Karabakh are part of attempts to unilaterally legitimize the unlawful situation in those territories, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said today.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement released on Wednesday, called the parliamentary elections set to take place in Artsakh on May 3 “illegal,” adding that Turkey “strictly condemns the act.” The Artsakh Republic has held democratic parliamentary elections since its independence with the participation of international monitors.

“[The elections] would mean an apparent violation of international law, UN Security Council resolutions and OSCE principles,” Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said. “At a time when the OSCE negotiations, aimed at achieving a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, and the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict are continuing, these illegal ‘elections’ are not going to contribute to settlement efforts in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region.”

The people of Artsakh have exercised their right to self-determination and have made it clear that they want a democratic republic independent of Azerbaijan and its authoritarian, racist dictatorship.

As long a s we are concerned the elections in N.K. are as legal as your local elections in the province of Kars that you occupied from the republic of Armenia about 90 years ago and in all the other provinces where you murdered 1,5 million of your own Armenian citizens a 100 years ago, not to mention your illegal blockade of the Armenian border with your country in the present day.

….Ankara Calls Artsakh Elections ‘Illegal’…. look who’s talking, what about Ankara’s holding Wester Armenia which is also illegal. Mevlut Cavusoglu think twice before talking, if you want to talk legalities than let’s start with returning Western Armenia and Genocide.

Publishing an article as such without a proper analysis attached to it, you are simply disseminating a Turkish propaganda. Please make some effort to include the Armenian side of the story for non-Armenian readers.
