BRUSSELS—The Belgian Prime Minister said that the tragic events the occurred from 1915 to 1917 in the Ottoman Empire should be “considered a genocide,” the Belgian Le Soir newspaper reported.

Speaking on behalf of the Belgian government, Prime Minister Charles Michel acknowledged on Thursday the Armenian Genocide, committed a century ago by the Young Turk government.

“The relationship between history and the future are occasionally complicated. My position is well known, I am of the view that the tragic events should be labeled as genocide, and that is the position of the Belgian government,” Prime Minister Michel declared in the Parliament Thursday in response to a question from two representatives of the ruling party.

Welcoming this statement, Member of Parliament Peter De Roover announced the filing of a resolution that would advance the issue further in the legislature.
