Artur Alexanyan Wins Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championship

LAS VEGAS (Combined Sources)—Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Alexanyan won his second world championship this weekend in Las Vegas at the wrestling 2015 World Championships, defeating London 2012 gold medalist Ghasem Rezaei of Iran 3-0 in the 98kg final.

The 23-year-old is considered Armenia’s best hope for a medal at the Summer Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro. Alexanyan defeated Japanese Yasouiro Yanouira (8-0), Norwegian Martin Nilsen (4-0) and Ukrainian Dimitri Timchenko (10-1) in the 1/16th round. In the semifinals, Alexanyan beat Romanian Alexous Tchiourariou (9-0) to reach the final match against Rezaei.

Aleksanyan is a previous silver medalist of the London Olympics and a three-time European champion.
