WASHINGTON (Massis Post)—The United States has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume negotiations on a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict following last month’s upsurge in fighting that threatened to spark a full-scale Armenian-Azerbaijani war.

Mark Toner, a U.S. State Department spokesman, appealed to the conflicting parties on Thursday as he commented on Armenia’s threats to recognize Karabakh as an independent republic.

“The United States, along with the rest of the international community, does not recognize Nagorno-Karabakh,” Toner told a daily news briefing in Washington. “Nagorno-Karabakh’s final status will only be resolved in the context of a comprehensive settlement.”

“So we urge the sides to come to the negotiating table in good faith in order to reach a settlement that achieves those goals,” he said.

Toner confirmed that the U.S. continues to stand for a Karabakh settlement based on the internationally recognized principles of territorial integrity, peoples’ right to self-determination, and non-use of force. “But we’ve also very much said that all of this needs to be worked out within the context of the [OSCE] Minsk Group,” he added. “There is a process here, and that process needs to be returned to by all sides.”

The State Department was quick to express serious concern at the outbreak of heavy fighting around Karabakh on April 2. But unlike Russia, Washington did not seem to engage in intensive diplomacy between the warring sides.

Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the Karabakh escalation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in several phone calls reported over the past month; most recently on May 2. The State Department said afterwards that the two men agreed on “the need to continue to try to restore a better sense of calm between the sides.”

Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow is now trying to arrange Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks that will also involve the U.S. and France. The three world powers have long been jointly spearheading international efforts to broker an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal as co-chairs of the Minsk Group.

Kerry also phoned the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents on April 25. He met them in Washington just days before Azerbaijan launched a military offensive in Karabakh on April 2.

In February, U.S. Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, warned that Azerbaijan’s current economic woes caused by falling oil prices have heightened the risk of a serious flare-up of violence in Karabakh.

“Baku’s sustained military buildups, coupled with declining economic conditions in Azerbaijan, are raising potential that the conflict will escalate in 2016,” Clapper said in annual testimony before a U.S. Senate committee.

The next war that a US president has to deal with will be in the Caucusus (Azerbaijan v. Armenia). Do we really want a president that has financial and real estate interests in Azerbaijan? I think not. Do we want a president that betrayed Armenian American Veterans? I think not.

Can’t trust Trump as Commander in Chief: Why? He has financial interests and hotels in Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Dubai and else where in the Islamic world. He can’t be trusted to bomb them in case there is another 9/11.

Can’t trust HRC either as Commander in Chief: Why? She betrayed the trust of Christian Armenian American Veterans of the Civil War, WWI, WWII, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and others by not honoring her pledges and promises to recognize the Armenian Genocide. She flip flopped to appease a muslim country like Turkey.

Therefore, it is Bernie or Bust.

I agree, Burnie or Bust, Trump as well Hillary both are NO good for US and the world, they will be good only for war mongers.

Correct! The US and other Western democratic nations support Bolshevik’s and Kemal Attaturk’s (the so called “secular Turkey”) genocidal policies.

Why should great powers set aside their economic interests and restore justice to Armenians or other nationalities who have suffered under dictatorships or capitalists’ greed for generations?

After all, who will then feed the corrupt corporations or politicians in the West or countries like Azerbaijan, if justice is restored?

    Russia is no angel, either!

Lavrov is trying not arrange A-A peace talks. He is trying to help Azeris to ripe fruits of its 4-day aggression. Azeris thanked Russians for a) not showing any support despite all sorts of agreements; b) never and nowhere condemning the brutality of killings. The identical pro-Azeri attitude was shown in 1988.
The horror of having this kind of neighbor and that kind of “friends” is that Armenians are slaughtered and still chose to attend the rules written by and for the benefit of murderers. There is no other nation responding in this humble way. Therefore, there is no word yet to describe this attitude of self-destruction. The word “genocide” appears to be not the only word discovered to describe the history of Armenians.

Mr. Toner, Mr. Carter and other Mr.-s, in the USA, if your neighbor committed mild aggression toward your family, there is a functional system that will condemn and penalize and even put into jail the neighbor. No matter who is reach or poor. I disgust more and more reading statements of the USA and Russian officials. They are nothing but pathetic. Nobody buys anymore the argument that they try to stay impartial. The impartiality was compromised long ago.

I know that the pain I feel today about my people being crashed under brutal boots of open-face murderers and murderers in disguise will stay with me, like it happened to 1.5 millions others in solitude for more than 100 years now.
I know that there is no human soul on the earth or god’s will in the sky that acts truly for the good of the Kind Nature. Everything proves the opposite – all is for the personal satisfaction.
Same type of guys, 100 years ago decided for my people what to choose – marching to death or fighting against it. These people know choices we make. This is the reason they do exactly same things today – in a concerted way, solving the famous “Armenian question”.
My people are asleep, confused, hypnotized by shining cheeks and well groomed faces of this evil messengers.

The status-quo of Artsakh is tolerated only because this predators plan to get bigger piece of the flesh when giving away Artsakh. Azerbaijan and Russia seem to be ready to strike a deal with the USA. Եվ թող անիծվի այս չարչիների աշխարհը: And damn this world of dealers:
