BAKU (Combined Sources)—After meeting with Azerbaijani leadership during a visit to Baku, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sounded an optimistic note saying that a Karabakh accord is “closer than ever.
Lavrov told reporters in Baku on Tuesday that “we have reasons to believe that we’re much closer now to success than ever before” in reaching a peace deal after talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Negotiations “have never been so intensive. They’re also substantive,” Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at the same news conference.
The Russian foreign minister said his meeting with Aliyev on Tuesday was “positive.” He met with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian last week.
“This will help us move forward in implementing the understanding reached by the presidents of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan at their meeting in Saint Petersburg on June 20,” he said referring to an agreement reached in the Russian city, the details of which have not been publicized.
Last week President Barack Obama “expressed his readiness to intensify efforts” to resolve the conflict during a phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, according to the White House.
The State Department announced Tuesday that Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Moscow on Thursday to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with senior Russian officials. He met separately with President Serzh Sarkisian and Aliyev on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Warsaw last week.

The Armenians would make a grave mistake by trusting the goat-lover Aliyev. Self-determination of Artsakh must be first and foremost in order of negotiations.
don’t tread our solders blood with empty promises by Potin or anyone else .Armenian government leaders must be very carful about their dealing with aliev any wrong move will cost them their position any everything they have.!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder what does that mean for the Artzagh Armenians. Probably, a sell out of their human rights
I say take a section of the pipeline, without damaging it, and then NK will have a place at the table. Otherwise, right now, they are on the menu.
Look at their faces.
Blushing bride Alyiev looks gratified, and Lavrov has a grimmace. ” What am I going to tell the Armenians now?” kinda look.
Aliev always has a fake smile on his ugly face, even if he sits on a chair with nails sticking up.
Russian officials never smile, so it is not a surprise.
How many times Armenians have to trust World’s power houses and get stabbed in the back?
This closer than ever has no details and substance. another dog-and-pony show. People of NK have to decide for their own future, not in Kremlin or Washington.
“Closer than ever”….depends how you define “ever”!!!!!!!!!
“Closer than ever” but somehow it never gets to that “ever”!!!!! Armenia is surrounded by wolves and should play its cards right.
