YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan) — The deputy-governor of Shirak–Petros Makeyan–said that he would urge all deputies representing Armenia’s earthquake belt to vote against the 1997 draft budget if the funds designated for the area are not increased.

Makeyan who represents the "Republic" bloc–stressed that the two billion drams allocated for the earthquake area by the draft budget would only be enough to carry out "cosmetic" work.

Aram Manoukian–Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly commission on science– education–culture and youth affairs stressed the importance of specifying the purpose for which the funds are designated.

Economy Minister Vahram Avetissian said that no specification of funds was planned. According to him–the government is now developing a program aimed at restoring state housing damaged in the 1988 earthquake.

Avetissian added that the number of damaged buildings registered in Yerevan was incomparably higher than in the earthquake area.
