YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)-A march in memory of the victims of the 1988-1991 pogroms in Sumgait–Kirovobad–Khanlar–Baku and other Armenian-populated cities in Azerbaijan was held Thursday in Yerevan.
Chairman of the Fund Against Violations of Law–Larisa Alaverdian–told the participants that the bloody pogroms of the Armenian population which followed the Sumgait massacre of 1988
would never have taken place if the Sumgait massacre had been defined as a genocide and the perpetrators had been punished.
Event organizers expressed disappointment over the fact that representatives of various public-political organizations or the Armenian government were not present.
Azeri President Gaidar Aliyev is said to have attended the commemoration event for "the victims of the Baku events of 1991" held on Jan. 20 in Baku.
