Tomsen Says Opposition Key to Democratic System

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)-The US Ambassador to Armenia–Peter Tomsen–stressed the role of opposition parties in a democracy during a forum dedicated to the Law on Elections–organized by the International Fund for Electoral Systems held on Thursday in Yerevan.

Mark Braden–a US advisor on the law–said that the most essential thing was that elections should be fair. "The winner should win–while the loser should lose."

According to Braden–the constituency should realize that the process of elections is fair. As to the Law on Elections itself–he said that the law is very important for successful elections–but it is not yet a guarantor of success.

The participants discussed the problems of vote counts–preparation of voter lists–formation and work of electoral commissions–process of the implementation of elections and completion of electoral ballots.
