Social Security Problems Assessed

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)Immigration–Social Security and unemployment were some of the topics discussed at a recent meeting which was held by the Commonwealth of Independent Consultative Council Feb. 27-28 in Yerevan–according to the Social Security Minister of Armenia–Hranoush Hakobian.

It was suggested that a program of action be developed to protect migran’s who work in other CIS countries and provide them with the same minimum wage as the natives of the particular country they are employed in.

Hakobian said that Armenia has such an agreement with Russia–which is the major labor force consumer. According to her–it is just as important to have similar agreemen’s with all CIS countries– especially with Ukraine and Belarus–which also have large groups of migran’s from Armenia.

Hakobian noted the intensive exchange of information on various social problems in the CIS countries as one of the positive results of the conference. Hakobian believes that a new stage of relations among CIS countries has started. This stage will mark the development and formation of both domestic and intergovernmental structures responsible for social security of the population.

The conference was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departmen’s of CIS member-states–except Azerbaijan–Moldova and Turkmen’stan.
