Glendale’s St. Mary’S Church in Danger

Today–Glendale’s St. Mary’s Church–once again–is confronted with the issue of the historical monumen’s law.

As the community is aware–in November 1995 this issue was addressed when the Glendale City Council reviewed the law on Historical Monument Preservation–exempting Glendale’s St. Mary’s Church from that provision.

It was decided that the fate of St. Mary’s and two other churches in Glendale would be decided separately and by ammending existing laws on historical preservation–based on which St. Mary’s and the two other churches would be exempted from those provisions. On Nov. 28–1995–during a hearing on this matter–City Council member Mary Ann Plumley spoke out for the exemption of St. Mary’s from the historical preservation law–saying–"We must right a historical wrong."

Despite the Nov. 1995 decision of the Glendale City Council–on March 10–1997 two city commissions called on the City Council to maintain St. Mary’s within the historical preservation framework.

On Tuesday–March 18–at 6 p.m.–the Glendale City Council is scheduled to make its final decision on this matter. The St. Mary’s Church dean–pastor and board of trustees call on all members of the Armenian community to gather at Glendale City Hall at 6 p.m. on March 18–and show their solidarity for the exemption of St. Mary’s from the historical preservation list.

It is the duty of every Armenian to stand up for their right and speak out for the church–since any decision against St. Mary’s could endanger the image of the Armenian community.

The historical preservation issue has long been a major concern for church leaders–who have faced numerous obstacles in planning renovations or changes to the church.

This issue must finally be resolved on March 18–and through delisting St. Mary’s –the church may continue its normal activities.
