Radiation and Waste Safety Project Under Way in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan) – Implementation of the second stage of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s "Upgrading Radiation and Waste Safety Infrastructure" is under way in Armenia–Regional Field Manager–IAEA expert Alejandro Bilbao said in an interview with Noyan Tapan.

Under the project it is planned to upgrade the system of the environmental radiation monitoring as well as settle the problems connected with prevention of radiation accidents. The program also provides for radiation monitoring in cases of medical irradiation.

Bilbao said that this major project is being implemented by IAEA in 53 countries–including 11 former East block countries. The duration of the project is five years. The implementation of the project in Armenia began in 1996.
