Roger Tamraz and Armenia

GLENDALE–A recent Wall Street Journal article identified Lebanese citizen Roger Tamraz–a main contributor to the Democratic National Committee–to have had ties with lobbying for the transport of Caspian oil to the West.

According to the Journal–Tamraz conducted shuttle diplomacy between Armenia and Azerbaijan to convince those nations to route the Azeri oil pipeline through Armenia and Turkey to the West.

"In attempting to negotiate his deal–Mr. Tamraz has conducted shuttle diplomacy between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At one point–he says he was close to getting Armenia to give up land it occupies in Azerbaijan–so both nations could prosper from the pipeline deal. But it broke down–Mr. Tamraz says– on the insistence from Azerbaijan that all of the land be returned . Now public opinion–in Armenia–is strong that the land shouldn’t be returned. `I was very disappointment,’ he says," wrote the Journal on Monday.

In its report the Journal also addresses the sensitivities surrounding the so-called "occupied territories" and the political interrelation between Armenia–Azerbaijan and Turkey.

While Tamraz’s White House coffees and former National Security Advisor Anthony Lake’s role in approving them have become a topic intense discussion and scrutiny by Congress and the media–the exact nature of Tamraz’s dealings in Armenia and Azerbaijan remain unclear.
