ANCA Welcomes Appointment of Robert Kocharyan as Prime Minister

WASHINGTON–DC – The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) today welcomed the appointment of Robert Kocharyan as Prime Minister of Armenia.

"We are pleased that Robert Kocharyan has agreed to continue his service to the Armenian people as the Prime Minister of Armenia," said ANCA Chairman Mourad Topalian. "We have confidence in his proven leadership ability and view his appointment as an important step toward stability in the region–and the continuation of the democratic and economic reforms initiated by former Prime Minister Armen Sarkisian."

Prior to his appointment–Kocharyan had served–since 1994–as the President of the Republic of Nagorno Karabagh. He was reelected by a wide margin in presidential elections in October of last year. Kocharyan replaces in this high office the reform-minded Armen Sarkisian–who resigned earlier this month due to health reasons. Assuming Kocharyan’s duties as President of Nagorno Karabagh will be Prime Minister Leonard Petrosian–who will serve as Acting President until elections are held within the next three months.

Kocharyan–43–accepted the offer–by the President of Armenia–to serve as Prime Minister after consultations in Stepanakert with the Security Council of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic–and special sessions of the Karabagh government and National Assembly. Upon announcing that he would accept the post–he assured the Karabagh government and people that he is confident that his successor will share his commitment to strengthening Nagorno Karabagh’s statehood and security.
