Aliyev Sharply Criticizes Kocharian Appointment

KIEV (Reuter)–Azeri President Gaidar Aliyev Tuesday sharply criticized the former Nagorno-Karabakh Republic president Robert Kocharian’s appointment as prime minister of Armenia. "This does not correspond to norms and international laws. We cannot accept such an appointment," he told reporters during a visit to the Ukrainian capital–Kiev. "We view the appointment of the leader of Karabakh’s Armenian community–Robert Kocharyan–as Armenian Prime Minister as negative. We do not understand it because Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan." But Kocharyan himself–speaking earlier in the Armenian capital Yerevan–told reporters: "I don’t think this (my appointment) will have any effect on the Karabakh question." "Armenian forces occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and some Azeri territories around it," Aliyev said. "Kocharyan–as so-called president of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic–played an active role in this occupation and in a bloody war."
