Radanovich Bonior Introduce Genocide Resolution

WASHINGTON–California Republican George Radanovich and House Democratic Whip David Bonior (D-Mich.) teamed up again in spearheading legislation calling on Congress to honor the victims of the Armenian Genocide and encourage Turkey to acknowledge this atrocity–reported the Armenian National Committee of America. "The entire Armenian-American community appreciates the leadership that Congressmen Radanovich and Bonior have shown in introducing this legislation and in impressing upon Turkey that it must end its shameless campaign to deny the Armenian Genocide," said Aram Hamparian–Executive Director of the ANCA. "By finally coming to terms with this tragic chapter in its history–the Turkish government can help reduce long-standing regional tensions and–in so doing–open the door to improved relations with Armenia." The Armenian Genocide bill–H.Con.Res.55–read as follows: Concurrent Resolution Honoring the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Whereas one and one-half million people of Armenian ancestry were victims of the genocide perpetrated by the governmen’s of the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923–prior to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey; Whereas each April–Members of Congress join the Armenian-American community in remembrances across the United States to commemorate the Armenian Genocide; and Whereas by consistently remembering and openly condemning the atrocities committed against Armenia’s–the Congress has helped to renew the commitment of the people of the United States to oppose any and all instances of genocide: Now–therefore–be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring)–That: 1. the Congress joins the Armenian-American community in honoring the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide; and 2. the United States should encourage the Republic of Turkey to take all appropriate steps to acknowledge and commemorate the atrocity committed against the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923. Similar legislation introduced in 1995 and received support from more that 180 Congressmen. The ANCA urges Armenian Americans in California and Michigan to thank Representatives Radanovich and Bonior for their continued leadership on Armenian-American issues and specifically for introducing the Armenian Genocide Resolution. Armenian-Americans across the country are asked to contact their Congressional representative and urge them to co-sponsor the initiative.
