Azeri Call POW Release a Ploy

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–National security minister of Azerbaijan–Namig Abbasov–called a recent statement by Armenia’s foreign ministry on the mutual release of POW’s–a trick. Abbasov noted that a list available at the Armenian office of the International Red Cross Committee includes only three Azeri POW’s and the negotiations of their release have been underway for more than three months. Abbasov noted that a month ago Azeri’s sent three Armenian POW’s to Nakhichevan for exchange–but Armenia had not released any POW’s. He said the Azeri State Committee for MIA’s and POW’s possesses a list of 4,823 POW’s. Meanwhile–the Armenian office of the Red Cross possesses a list of seven POWs–of whom three persons are being held in Armenia–whereas the rest are in Nagorno-Karabakh. Abbasov said that there are 18 POW’s of Armenian origin in Azerbaijan. All of them are being held in a Gobustan camp. Abbasov stressed that formal negotiations on exchange of POW’s began in March 1993
