Other Countries Implicated in Illegal Arms Deals

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Russia has illegally supplied arms to not only Armenia but other countries as well–including Turkmen’stan and Azerbaijan," the Russian Segodnya newspaper quoted a high-ranking official of the Federal Security Service of Russia as saying.

He said that according to special agencies investigating the matter–arms were supplied through broker firms–bypassing official structures.

Meanwhile–the Chief Military Procurator of Russia–Valentin Panichev–said that his department never received any evidence pointing to this.

Panichev said that the investigation of the illegal supply of weaponry to Armenia is still underway.

The alleged illegal arms supply was also one of the main topics during the CIS leaders Summit in Moscow.

Azerbaijan’s Aliyev told journalists that following Boris Yeltsin’s proposal–the leaders decided to postpone the consideration of the point until the final results of the inquiry were known. The presidents are likely to discuss the problem at their next meeting in June.
