Ter Petrosyan Discusses Kocharian?s Appointment

YEREVAN (Hayastani Hanrapetutiun)–"If you consider Kocharian to be an Azerbaijani citizen–then I would only be proud if a citizen of Armenia’should become its Prime Minister," President of Armenia–Levon Ter-Petrosyan said during a press conference on Saturday where he discussed the negative attention Kocharian’s appointment as Armenia’s Prime Minister has received from the Azeris.

Elmira Akhundova–a journalist from the Russian Literaturnaya Gazeta in Azerbaijan–asked Ter-Petrosyan if he considered Karabakh a province of Armenia and if Armenia’s Constitution forbade the appointment of a foreign citizen to such a post.

Ter-Petrosyan responded by saying–"First–the position of Armenia has not changed. We have always supported the right of self-determination for the population of Karabakh. We continue to do so today–and we’ll continue to do so tomorrow. In regard with assigning a foreign citizen as Armenian Prime Minister–our constitution does not prohibit this. We have had ministers who were US citizens and we have had a deputy prime minister–who was also a citizen of the US."
