Ter Petrosyan Aliyev Confirm Cease Fire Accord

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"I have just spoken to Gaidar Aliyev and now can openly declare and can give a 100 percent guarantee that neither Armenia–nor Karabakh are going to violate the current cease-fire–nor will they allow military operations to resume," Levon Ter-Petrosyan told journalists in Moscow after his meeting with his Azeri counterpart–Gaidar Aliyev.

Ter-Petrosyan said both sides had agreed to take advantage of any opportunity "to meet and discuss all their problems" at international forums. Moreover–the two sides agreed to telephone each other more often.

The Armenian official believes that the best way not to allow such rumors to acquire any provocative nature is "our direct talks–during which we can settle all misunderstandings. I don’t doubt that both Armenian and Azeri journalists are anxious for the conflict to be resolved as soon as possible and the three-year peace to be preserved. I would like you to realize the following: there are people who are not interested in a solution to the problem. In our countries and in other foreign countries such processes are always attended by rumors–not to mention provocation."

Ter-Petrosyan continued–"That is–the so-called verbal cease-fire is also a very important factor on state level–and on the presidential level. We also ought to observe it–and it would be pretty nice if this was on the level of other departmen’s–ministries–even on the community level–including the press. You may promote this process."

Aliyev assured that Azerbaijan will never allow the cease-fire to be broken and hostilities to resume. "We shall maintain this regime up to the moment when we can agree to have complete peace," he said. The Azeri official noted that during the meeting the sides agreed that "we can really do much more than we have been doing so far" to reach a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh crisis.

At the same news conference Aliyev said that Azerbaijan–Georgia and Ukraine were not creating–nor going to create any political axis against Moscow.
