Russian Deputies Comment on Armenia Russia Relations

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"It is impossible to run an anti-Armenian line in Russia–because public opinion has long and traditionally been pro-Armenian. And it is going to continue this way," said Duma deputy Yuri Nesterov–commenting on Lev Rokhlin’s statemen’s and anti-Armenian posture.

Nesterov continued–"Russia’should run its policy in relation to Armenia based on a mission of restoring the balance. We spoke in detail with our military representatives–and we can say only one thing: that arms given to Armenia were far from restoring the balance violated by the Azeri side."

Nesterov noted–"As for General Rokhlin–I am not going to find out concrete motives of his actions. They may be complicated and individual. But they have nothing to do with the official position of the State Duma–because the session simply heard Rokhlin’s report and did not vote on any resolutions or decisions."

"The program of our visit was arranged perfectly well," Russian parliamentarian Nina Danilova said.

The deputies–who had returned from a working visit in Armenia–assessed the results of numerous meetings with Armenia’s officials positively.

Parliamentarian Yevgeni Bolshakov–a representative of the LDPR faction–said that following the results of meetings one might arrive at the definite conclusion that "We are with Armenia–and Armenia is with us." He said he believed that parliamentarians ought to speed up the process of integration between the two countries–while there shouldn’t be any claims as to who is better and who is worse. Bilateral relations should be built on the basis of equality.

Russian parliamentarians voiced their common opinion that they had reached mutual understanding on all points discussed–including NATO expansion. Bolshakov noted that "Armenia’s tough position on that matter impressed us."

Danilova assured that upon returning to Moscow they would call a news conference to present their views on a number of questions regarding Armenia.
