Community Urged to Take Part in Commemoration

GLENDALE–The committee commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide–issued its second announcement over the weekend–in which it urged the Armenian-American community to take part in Genocide commemoration program scheduled for April 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Montebello Martyrs’ Monument.

The announcement emphasizes the importance of each and every Armenians presence at the gathering–explaining that the program would include speakers and presentations from a wide array of community members including a presentation by Armenian Consul General to Los Angeles Armen Baibourtian.

"We should make our voices heard against the crime of Genocide and for the condemnation of this injustice," read the announcement.

"Every absence will be greeted by an evil smirk [by Turkey] which will be attributed to apathy," continued the statement.

The organizing committee also outlined the program–which will include a special requiem mass at the monument–to be followed by messages by political officials and Armenian organizational representatives.

Performances by famous Armenian singers and a youth choir are scheduled to highlight the cultural portion of the program. Representatives of Armenian and public schools–as well as scouting–cultural and youth organizations will be placing memorial wreaths at the monument.

The Armenian Relief Society and the American Red Cross have also planned a blood drive in memory of Genocide victims at the monument.

"By flocking to the Montebello Martyrs’ Monument on April 24–not only would we be paying our respects to the 1.5 million victims of the Genocide–but we would also be sending a clear message to the Turks to not bank on the endangerment of our memory," read the statement.
