Ter Petrosyan Won?t Run for Third Term

YEREVAN (Itar-Tass)–Levon Ter- Petrosyan–speaking to a group of journalists–said he would not run for a third term in 2001–citing the constitution–which allows only two terms of the presidency for the same individual.

"I am surely interested in continuity and want my successor to continue the reforms," explained Ter-Petrosyan. However–he did not name an individual whom he regards as the successor to himself.

Argumen’s have been made that Ter-Petrosyan would be eligible for a third term–because his current term is regarded as the first since the adoption of the Constitution in 1995.
