France ’98 Hopes Fade for Armenia N. Ireland

YEREVAN (Reuter)–Armenia and Northern Ireland fought out a goalless draw in their World Cup group nine qualifying match on Wednesday which left both countries with no realistic chance of reaching the finals next year.

Both teams had goals disallowed in the first half–the visitors for a foul and Armenia for offside.

Otherwise Northern Ireland had the better of the match but were denied by home goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky.

But his opposite number Alan Fettis also had to be at his best to deny Hamlet Mkhitaryan after just two minutes.

The result leaves Northern Ireland fourth in the group with seven points from seven games while Armenia–still seeking their first ever World Cup qualifying win–are fifth on four points from five games.

Although mathematically both teams are still in contention for a place–the result realistically ends the aspirations of both of them.
