Leni Fischer to Visit Transcaucasus

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Chairwoman of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly Leni Fischer is to pay an official visit to Yerevan May 6 within the framework of the Transcaucasian tour which began Tuesday.

The main goal of the ten-day visit to the Transcaucasus is to learn problems connected with Abkhaz and Karabakh conflicts. As was mentioned in the statement by Council of Europe’s representatives–the acceptance of the three Transcaucasian states into the Council of Europe is closely connected with the settlement of the conflicts in the region.

The statement placed a special stress on the fact that Georgia has the most real chance to be accepted at the Council–however–this to a great extent depends on the process of peaceful settlement of the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict.

Upon arriving in Baku Fischer said that during the visit she is going to consider the opportunity of creating conditions to achieve progress in the negotiations on settlement of the Armenian-Azeri conflict.

AND press reports that Fischer noted that she will also discuss "illegal supply of Russian arms to Armenia" with the Azeri leadership.

Fischer said that she will also address the possibility of establishment of a Commonwealth of Transcaucasian States and a common Parliamentary Assembly. However–as she noted–this problem can be viewed more carefully only after the conflicts in Abkhazia and Karabakh are settled and peace is established. Fischer was scheduled to leave for Tbilisi Saturday.
