Asadourian Re Elected to Canadian Parliament

During Monday’s parliamentary elections in Canada–Sarkis Asadourian–the only Canadian-Armenian member of parliament–retained his seat–by being reelected from the Bramton Center District in Ontario.

Asatoorian–whose district has virtually no Armenian residents–was part of the sweep by the Liberal Party–which retained its 155 seats of the total 301. The Bramton Center District–which was the result of regional reapportionment–was assigned to Asadourian by Premier Jean Chretien.

The Armenian candidate received 18,616 of the votes–8,000 more than his leading opponent. Upon learning of the results–Asadourian–at a campaign party–thanked all of his supporters and conveyed his appreciation to his constituents.

On behalf of the Toronto Armenian Revolutionary Federation "Soghomon Tehlirian" Chapter–Krikor Shitilian congratulated the first reelected Armenian to the parliament.

Asadourian–during the period of 1993-1997–served on the parliamentary immigration and naturalization–as well as internal affairs and trade commissions. At the same time he was responsible for strengthening Canada-Armenia relations through a special committee devoted to issues of concern to the two countries.

The Armenian National Committee of Canada–as well as regional and local chapters–participated in the election process by establishing contact with candidates and learning of their views on a variety of issues–including the recognition of the Armenian Genocide–the strengthening of Karabakh’s self determination rights–as well as minority rights in Canada.

The ANC-Canada endorsed some 25 candidates from four districts in the Armenian concentrated provinces of Ontario–Quebec and British Columbia.

Twenty-two of the ANC-Canada endorsed candidates were elected.
