YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Chairman of Armenian Self-Determination Union Paruyr Hairkian and a member of the same party’s parliamentary caucus Nerses Zeynalvandian met with Levon Ter-Petrosyan Tuesday–to discuss issues put forth during the SDU’s party conference last week. The meeting was called by Ter-Petrosyan–in response to SDU’s petition adopted during the party’s congress–urging the immediate inclusion of the Armenian Genocide within the framework of Armenia’s foreign policy. This sentiment was also reiterated during a rally organized by the opposition party on June 5.
The proposal also included suggestions for holding fair elections and a review of the constitution–with a provision calling for the dissolution of the parliament and subsequent early parliamentary elections.
Sources at the SDU reported that following the meeting–Ter-Petrosyan has said that he would take the party’s proposals into consideration. Ter-Petrosyan reportedly also stated that the proposal must be evaluated from all aspects and its pros and cons must be addressed.
"We do not support these meetings since they do not meet the requiremen’s of the Accord Alliance," vice-chairman of the Constitutional Right Union Hayk Baboukhanian said regarding the Ter-Petrosyan-Hairikian meeting.
He said that Hairikian stated that "he will not coordinate such meetings with leaders of party-members of the National Accord Alliance."
Baboukhanian said that the Alliance wants Armenian authorities to hold new elections for all branches of power and adopt a new Constitution.
