Canada ANC Visit Iranian Ambassador

OTTAWA–As an expression of good faith and friendly relations between two communities–representatives of the Armenian National Committee of Canada met last week with Iran’s Ambassador to Canada Said Muhammed Hussein Adeli.

The ANCC delegation included Raffi Der Boghossian and Hagop Janbazian and the Dean of the Toronto parish Right Rev. Shahe Panossian.

Discussions during the meeting ranged from last month’s devastating earthquake in Northeastern Iran–the recent elections that took the international community by surprise–as well as the 1988 earthquake in Armenia.

The ANCC representatives also presented a $4,000 (Canadian) check to the ambassador on behalf of the Armenian community for earthquake relief purposes–explaining that the amount was collected during fundraising efforts in Montreal and Toronto by the Armenian community.

Ambassador Adeli expressed his and his country’s deep gratitude to the Armenian community–and touched on the immense respect the Iranian authorities have historically harbored toward the Armenian community in Iran.

He also praised the important contribution by the Iranian-Armenian community in the advancement of Iran’s economy.

The ANCC representatives took the opportunity to congratulate the people of Iran on the recent presidential elections and expressed their congratulations to Iran’s president-elect Ayatollah Muhammed Khatemi–who won a landslide victory late last month.

In imparting detailed information regarding the elections the ambassador also stated that Western governmen’s and media were surprised at the truly democratic elections in Iran.

Present with ambassador Adeli–were deputy ambassador Reza Shaker as well as the ambassador’s third secretary Muhammed Said Natchaffi.
