Russia Will Support Caucasus Integration

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Russia is very concerned about the formation of integrated Transcaucasian states and the establishment of friendly relations with them–Anatoly Zaytsev–director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Fourth Department for CIS–said in Yerevan.

Speaking at the conference "Transcaucasus today: prospects of regional integration," Zaytsev noted that Russia’sees the guarantees of security in economic integration–and not in military equilibrium of Caucasian states. Among the most perspective spheres he mentioned transportation and energy. In particular–he stressed a possibility of restoring parallel work of power systems of Russia and the Transcaucasus–for which it is necessary to reactivate energy links among Transcaucasian states. He reminded that Russia has agreemen’s with Georgia and Armenia on construction of gas pipelines on their territory to supply Russian gas to Turkey. According to Zaytsev–Russia thinks that different countries can cooperate with Russia differently and with various degrees of cooperation.

Priority tasks in the sphere of Russian relations with Transcaucasian states are to deblock the railway via Abkhazia–increase trading volumes of Russia and Transcaucasus–cooperate in spheres of mining and smelting–chemical–military production and establish intergovernmental financial-industrial groups. Russia is ready to guarantee investmen’s of Russian capital into Transcaucasian republics.
