Thousands Attend Navasartian Games Closing Ceremonies Weekend

VAN NUYS–Thousands of athletes–community members–fans and spectators flocked to Birmingham High School over the holiday weekend to celebrate the closing of the 22nd Annual Homenetmen Navasartian Games.

The three-day festival and sporting event was one of the most attended gatherings of its kind in the organization’s history.

The Sunday closing ceremonies were attended by an estimated crowd of more than 15,000 individuals from various locales–including several western States–as well as Europe and the Middle East.

The weekend festivities included some 40 booths manned by various Homenetmen chapters–sister organizations–and community business sponsors. In addition–the festival was enhanced by a slew of popular Armenian performers including Karnig Sarkissian–Harout Pamboukjian and others.

Presided over by this year’s honorary presidents–Mr. and Mrs. Garbis and Theres Kemanjian–the closing ceremonies offered several surprises–including a spectacular air show with three skydivers flying into the stadium carrying the official flag of the 22nd Navasartian Games that amazed the Birmingham High School standing room only crowd.

Some 5,000 athletes and scouts from virtually every Homenetmen chapter took part in the final parade of athletes–which was followed by the distribution of the winners’ trophies and a concert of revolutionary songs by Sarkissian.

Saturday’s Navasartian Victory Ball at the Universal Hilton Hotel was also a huge success–as some 1,500 guests attended the lavish ball.

The entire four-day festival truly reaffirmed Homenetmen’s presence in the community–and illustrated just why it is that Homenetmen is as successful an organization as it is.

Further details on the four-day festival–including results from all athletic games will be published in the upcoming weekend edition of Asbarez.
