Ancient Ani Listed as Endangered Monument

NEW YORK (New York Times)–The ancient Armenian capital city of Ani is listed as a "Most Endangered Monument" in the 99 additions to the 1996 World Monumen’s Fund listing of the world’s 100 most endangered sites.

Endangered sites are nominated by governmen’s–preservation groups and individuals.

They are cultural–artistic–archeological and historical landmarks around the world imperiled by polluted air–war–natural disasters–population pressures–neglect and throngs of tourists.

The World Monumen’s Fund is a non-profit organization which helps raise money for restoration.

It has committed more than $4 million to projects at 48 sites.

An updated list of endangered sites will be made available on September 5.
