ArmenTel Sale Endangers National Security

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)-A statement by the National Democratic Union regarding the scheduled sale of ArmenTel in the international marked is expected to be issued in the immediate future.

The NDU says that the foreign ownership of the Republic’s communication system will make the country’s national security quite vulnerable.

It was said at a recent meeting of the NDU Council in Gumri that financially the establishment of ArmenTel "was a very suspicious matter" and there might be "financial games being played."

An NDU council member said this opinion can be explained by the fact that the authorities had been unwilling to provide full explanation on the financial standing of the company.

"I would also like to mention that bare assurances by the president–prime minister and communication minister are not enough," parliamentarian David Vardanian–a member of the NDU administration–said–stressing that "we often hear such assurances and are now convinced that any ordinary robbery is presented as a step for the good of the country."
