Yerevan to Host Festival of French Cinema

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Festival of French cinema will take place in Yerevan July 24-31–with six of the seven films to be shown in Yerevan being shot by young directors. According to Gerard Petrossian–the French embassy’s attach for culture–the organizers are the French Embassy to Armenia–Ministry of Culture and Sports and Union of Cinematographers of Armenia.

The French Ambassador to Armenia–Michel Legras–noted that in the past 2-3 years–France has been fighting the domination of American cinema at French film festivals. Legras said that France shoots 15-200 films yearly. These films are financed by the government–3-4 French channels–as well as through private sponsors. According to Legras–cinema is an art requiring state patronage. He also thinks that to surmount the competition with foreign movies–the Armenian film-makers should cooperate with their foreign colleagues. Such cooperation was established with Georgia.

Legras also said that Europe traditionally marks a day of French music on July 21. This holiday will be marked in Armenia as well–but on a later date. Armenian and French music will be heard in Yerevan streets–and in December–days of Armenian culture will be marked in the French city of Lyons.
