Karabian Awarded “St. Gregory” Medal

Walter Karabian–Esq.–a longtime supporter and backer of the Armenian community and its many organizations–was awarded the St. Gregory The Illuminator Medal of Honor Sunday–June 29 from His Holiness Karekin I–Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenia’s.

The presentation–which was conducted by His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian–Primate of the Armenian Church Western Diocese–took place at the St. John Garabed Armenian Church in Hollywood.

The entire Parish Council of St. John Garabed Church led the procession into the church Sunday–headed by cross bearer Benjamin Karabian–son of the honoree–followed by Messrs. Ryan Doheny and Migirdich Menzilcian while the church choir sang "Ooragh Ler."

Father Manoog Markarian was escorted by the Deacons to the baptismal altar–holding the Encyclical from His Holiness Karekin I on a silver platter which he gave to Hovsepian.

His Eminence read the Armenian text of the Encyclical from His Holiness–while Benjamin Karabian read the text in English. Thereafter–Hovsepian pinned the medal on Walter Karabian’s heart–also giving a small replica medal to Karabian’s wife Laurel.

The Primate then gave a brief history of the Armenian Church Services to the congregation–and an outline of the life of St. Gregory The Illuminator–Patron Saint of the Armenian Church for whom the medal was named.

Hovsepian also informed the congregation that in the past–Karabian had contributed $100,000 toward the construction of the main altar of the Cathedral–and that on this occasion–had pledged another $100,000 to the Western Diocese Endowment Fund.

Karabian thanked all for the honor bestowed upon him–after which–a luncheon took place in Kazandjian Hall with some 200 invited guests.
