ANM Congress Prelude to Split in Republic Bloc

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The decision by the Political Council of the Intellectual Armenia Party is a step allowing party members to decide whether to become a member or a founder of a new deputy group–in particular–the Homeland group. This step can be only welcomed. I am very pleased to be together with members of the Party among the founders of a deputy group which will be considerably dominating in further parliament activities," Chairman of the Parliament standing Commission for State and Legal Issues Edward Yegorian told Noyan Tapan.

Yegorian believes the parties forming the Republic bloc will have nothing else to do but quit the bloc in the near future–and that is inevitable. "The 9th ANM Congress laid ground for a split in the Republic faction–as it has become clear that it is not in the habit of ANM to take the factionalism as an acceptable phenomenon," Yegorian commented. In his opinion–the bloc is facing a split also because some people–including himself–are going to quit the faction. The reason for that–according to Yegorian–is that the leaders of the bloc are pursuing policies differing from the program of the bloc–that is "the words and the actions do not correspond."

According to Yegorian–whether consciously or subconsciously ANM is rather detached from real life–the decisions do not correspond to reality–the ideology and proclaimed program take a back burner–while the elite of the ruling Party completely lack the desire to review the situation–change the quality of decisions and return to the implementation of programs. "The decisions were prompted only by the fear to protect the chair," Yegorian said. Such an abstract approach having little to do with social life realities–in his opinion–is sure to lead to the escalation of tensions.

At the same time he noted that he would not be in the list of ANM candidates for the 1999 parliamentary elections: there would be a new alliance with a different list. "We must do our best for our country to be developing without revolutions–and our deputy group is certain to show it by its activities," Yegorian concluded.
