Women Comprise Majority of Unemployed in Armenia

YEREVAN (Azg–Noyan Tapan)–An overwhelming majority of the unemployed in Armenia are women’said representative Yu Veyn Chang of the UN Economic and Public Development Department in Armenia’s Ministry of Social Security at a recent meeting with journalists.

Women are usually the first let go during job reductions.

Chang stressed that to avoid such problems–women organizations in Armenia’should work on the development of legislation on rights of women.

She presented programs–proposed by the United Nations–which reflect the principle of equality between men and women in society.

Data on other population strata was not available. The United Nations plans to conduct further study into the unemployment situation in Armenia.
