STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic National Assembly Speaker and presidential candidate Arthur Tovmassian resigned his position–citing his defeat in Monday’s presidential polls.
The Karabakh legislature convened a special session called by Tovmassian to discuss his resignation.
The 26 members of the National Assembly taking part in the session addressed the speaker’s concern and by a vote of 23 to 2–with abstention approved Tovmassian’s resignation.
Tovmassian received less than five percent of the votes during the election which saw an overwhelming victory for Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Arkady Ghoukassian who received 90 percent of the votes.
National Assembly Secretary Emma Gabrielian will assume the speaker’s duties until new elections are set for the speaker’s position.
