Yeltsin Tells Primakov to Intensify Karabakh Peace

MOSCOW (Itar-Tass)–Russian President Boris Yeltsin met with his Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov Friday and urged him to intensify Russian efforts for a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict–the presidential press service announced.

Yeltsin and Primakov discussed in detail the efforts to bring about a settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. It was emphasized that Russia’s mediation efforts should pave the way for a final settlement of the issue.

Yeltsin drew the Minister’s attention to the need particularly to intensify the Ministry’s work to bring about a solution to the Karabakh problem.

Russia’s policy in the Caucasian region was discussed in a broad context. The President pointed out the unacceptability of judgmen’s to the effect that the treaty signed between Russia and Armenia is ostensibly directed against other countries. The Russian Federation is interested in developing stable relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
