Lebanese Speaker Calls for Closer Ties

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Lebanon’s parliamentary delegation led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and accompanied by National Assembly speaker Babken Ararktsian visited St.Echmiadzin Sunday.

Noting the importance of the meeting His Holiness Karekin I underscored that the Armenian community of Lebanon was one of the most important communities of the Armenian Diaspora. According to Karekin I–Lebanon and Syria are the countries where the majority of western Armenia’s found shelter and sanctuary after the Genocide and where they became full-fledged citizens.

"Armenia’s are a part of Lebanon’s independence," Berri said. Reminding that His Holiness spent 18 years in Lebanon–15 of which Lebanon was involved in the war–the Lebanese Parliament Speaker highly appreciated Catholicos’ contribution to the matter of salvation of the Lebanese people.

Ararktsian told His Holiness that there were no problems in Armenia-Lebanon relations and that only practical steps were needed to make those relations stronger.
