Lebanese Leader Pays Tribute to 1915 Victims

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri described the halls of the Armenian Genocide Museum as horrifying and disturbing–while visiting the Dzidzernagabert Genocide memorial complex Saturday.

"The verdict of history is not enough–but it is necessary–all the same–that the past does not reoccur in the future," the high-ranking guest wrote in the museum guestbook.

Mentioning the resolution adopted by the Lebanese Parliament on May 3 denouncing the 1915 Genocide of Armenia’s–Barri gave the original of the resolution to the Museum Director Lavrenty Barseghian.

"We live together with our Armenian friends and every year mark the memory of the Genocide–but at the same time we are going through another genocide in the south of Lebanon–a genocide on the part of Israel," the Lebanese parliament speaker emphasized.

"We are proud of our friendship with Armenia. This can be proved by the existence of the Armenian community which in its turn is proud of belonging to Lebanon and has always been participating in the process of reforms and contributing to the development of our country," Berri said–addressing Armenia’s National Assembly Monday.

Presenting the current political situation in Lebanon–the Lebanese parliament speaker stressed that geopolitically the south of Lebanon concerns the Palestinian problem–which–according to him–is the most important problem in the Middle East. Berri informed that disregarding the current agreemen’s–Israel has continued to violate Lebanon’s borders up to the present–and the recent events on August 18 are clear evidence of that.

Berri pointed out the importance of Armenia’s role in the Middle East peace process. "We hold that the developmen’s in the Middle East immediately concern the interests of your country–as well as those of a number of Middle East countries–"he said.

According to him–the Middle East conflict is now extending from the Arab countries to the neighboring countries of the region–including Armenia and Iran.

Berri is sure that the Israel-Turkey Alliance poses danger not only to the present and the future of the region–but to the world security and stability as well.
