Pleas for Markarian Release Continue

YEREVAN (Hayots Ashkhar)–In a letter addressed to Levon Ter-Petrosyan–Albert Bazeyan–a member of the National Assembly from the "Yerkrapah" voluntary battalion requested the release of Hrant Markarian–defendant in the so-called "Dro" trial.

"In our opinion–you [Ter-Petrosyan] hold the key to national and political harmony and cooperation–and to use that key is your professional duty," wrote Bazeyan. "Therefore–we believe the first real step to this end will be the release of Karabakh freedom fighter and leader Hrant Markarian from prison."

The "Yerkrapah" battalion is the ruling Armenian National Movement’s loyalist volunteer group–which incidentally opened fire on demonstrators after the Sept. 25–1996 presidential elections.
