NDU Plans to Aggressively Oppose Armenian Government

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Our main goal is to overthrow the authorities. However simple rallies have not changed the situation. Up to now we were not well organized. Now it is necessary to undertake measures aimed at ensuring a stand-off. We need to establish relevant structures–as well as set up close cooperation with trade unions and various organizations. These were the main points made by National Democratic Union Chairman Vazgen Manoukian at a rally Thursday devoted to the events that followed last year’s presidential polls.

Speaking of the consequences of the September events last year–Manoukian voiced confidence that the Armenian nation would not forgive those who dared to humiliate its dignity.

He voiced special concern over the stance of the military leadership–which directly backed repeated voting of servicemen at several polling stations.

"How can you speak of patriotism–hope for such an army–believe in its ability to protect the achievemen’s of Karabakh–when the military leadership behaves this way," he said.

Despite sharp criticism in relation to the current authorities–Manoukian–nevertheless–did not rule out the possibility of negotiations–in particular–about the terms and conditions of elections–guarantees of fair elections–national unification of Armenia and the Diaspora.

Manoukian also did not rule out the possibility of a close cooperation of NDU and several members of the former National Accord Alliance.

"We are not going to wait for a response–we will fight," he declared. The rally–attended by representatives of NDU–Constitutional Right Union–National Progress and Democratic Party–paid special attention to the solution of numerous social problems–and announcemen’s were made for a revitalized social movement.

David Vardanian–NDU administrative member–noted in his speech that if social conditions of the people remains in the current situation–it will be impossible to defend and protect the Karabakh achievemen’s. He put a special stress on the analysis of causes that led to a split within the National Accord Alliance.

In particular–Vardanian opined that some of the parties involved in that alliance drew a conclusion after the September events last year that the authorities will live long and decided to find a suitable place for them. But the NDU–according to David Vardanian–is in deep opposition–and its aim is to prepare people for a stand-off–using all democratic methods for that.

At the same time–he mentioned the possibility to use force in response to authorities.
