Azerbaijan Responds to Minsk Group Proposal

BAKU (Noyan Tapan)–Azeri officials handed their country’s response to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s proposal of a gradual solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict–to the Russian Minsk Group delegation.

According to Radio Liberty–the plan calls for the withdrawal of Armenian forces from six region and parallel to a discussion of the Karabakh status–the handover of Shoushi and Lachin.

Upon receipt of the proposal Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov commended the Azeri for the positive approach to the peace process.

Meanwhile at the United Nations–Azeri delegation head Rasul Guliyev told the UN General Assembly that Azerbaijan was prepared to grant the "greatest autonomy" to the Armenian population of Nagorno- Karabakh.

Guliyev also stated that Azerbaijan rejected a military takeover of the region and–the creation of–what he termed–a second Armenian republic
