Cooperation Needed to Facilitate European Council Membership

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The legislative and executive branches of Armenia’s government must cooperate in order to facilitate Armenia’s inclusion in the Council of Europe–stated Artur Baghdasarian–a member of the Foreign Relations Committee at the National Assembly of Armenia Wednesday.

"Armenia is now moving towards its membership in the Council of Europe–so cooperation is needed between the legislative and the executive powers," Baghdasarian said. " In my mind–cooperation has been unsatisfactory with regards to the Council of Europe until now."

Baghdasarian–who is also a member of the Armenian parliamentary delegation at the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe–said that at a Monday news conference–Foreign Ministry spokesman Arsen Gasparian–besides hurling personal insults– said cooperation between Armenia’s highest powers was unsatisfactory– which–according to Baghdasarian–shouldn’t have been addressed at that time.

In Baghdasarian’s opinion–now that Turkey–Azerbaijan and Georgia are exerting pressure to prevent Armenia from becoming a member of the Council of Europe–Armenia’s Foreign Ministry must show a more careful and responsible approach towards the aforementioned problem.

According to Baghdasarian–Armenia has to ensure a more intense participation at sessions of the Council of Europe. For example– neighboring states are also represented by their ambassadors and diplomatic representatives–besides deputy groups–which are involved in lobbying at the sessions.

Baghdasarian also said a top delegation of the Council of Europe was expected to arrive in Armenia’soon within the framework of Armenia’s membership in the Council of Europe–to draw up a special political report.
