Ottoman Anniversary Celebration is Politically Motivated

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–UNESCO has never marked the anniversary of the existence of any empire in history–and now is not the time to start–reiterated a large gathering of Armenian students in front of the Yerevan State University Friday.

The protest–which attracted hundreds of demonstrators–was intended to draw attention to the fact that to celebrate the jubilee of the Ottoman Empire would not be a cultural statement–but an attempt to reinforce Turkey’s position in the region–which is in opposition of the Armenian people.

"We are the owners of our history–the Armenian Cause–and will mark the anniversary our own way," said protesters in unison. "We will show the true face of Turkey–which is hiding behind a mask of a lamb."

Protesters called on Armenia’s students to address letters to UNESCO–and to the Armenian parliament–demanding they join the protest.

The demonstration Friday was the first action by Armenian students against Turkey’s proposal to mark the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire–and similar events have already been planned.
