Intellectuals Demand Change in Leadership

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Our homeland is on the brink of a national disaster which has come about because of the criminal activities of the leadership of Armenia," a statement by a group of well-known representatives of the intellectual and political community stated.

The document pointed out that "during the six-year rule of the ANM (Armenian National Movement) leadership–those cringing and untalented career politicians of the previous regime who joined them–the country sustained irreplaceable losses. The great national heritage accumulated by the former generations in all spheres of life has been wasted," the statement contended.

The authors of the document demand that Levon Ter-Petrosyan immediately dissolve the National Assembly and order early parliamentary elections–whereafter–showing civil and moral courage–he should resign. While the newly elected parliament is to form a provisional government and organize early presidential elections. "The top-priority task for the newly appointed government–whose aim will be to get a real and just solution to the Karabakh conflict–will be to ensure the might of the national army," the statement went on.

Artashes Geghamian–Hrant Khachatrian–Rafael Ghazarian–Sos Sargssian–Silva Kaputikian–Razmik Davoyan and others signed the statement.
